While the Iberian Peninsula was locked in its centuries-long struggle to reclaim its lands, a parallel and deeply interconnected epic unfolded across the Mediterranean. The crusades shared a fundamental ideological kinship with the Spanish Reconquista: both were fueled by the conviction to recover ancient Christian territories—lands once tied to the legacy of the Roman Empire—that had fallen under Islamic rule.

In the medieval European imagination, these distant realms across the sea became known as Outremer—a French term meaning literally "Over-the-Sea". It became the collective name for the Crusader States established in the Levant after the First Crusade, representing both a physical frontier and a profound spiritual crusade.

2. The Call to Arms: Clermont and the Road

to the Holy Land

The catalyst for this monumental movement erupted in November 1095 at the Council of Clermont. Pope Urban II issued an impassioned plea to the assembled nobility and clergy of Europe, urging them to go to the aid of the Byzantine Empire and liberate Jerusalem from Muslim control. The response was electric, echoing across the continent with the thunderous cry: Deus vult! ("God wills it!").

What followed was one of the most arduous and perilous migrations in human history. Tens of thousands of knights, peasants, and pilgrims embarked on the long journey to the Holy Land, braving unimaginable hardship. Starvation, disease, hostile terrain, and exhaustion claimed countless lives along the way.

As they marched or sailed eastward, the travelers faced brutal realities:

• The Encounter with Byzantium: Many land routes led through the magnificent yet tense capital of Constantinople, where Western crusaders and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire eyed each other with mutual suspicion and cultural unease.

• Perils of the Sea: Those who chose maritime routes from Italian ports—long before Italy existed as a unified nation—had to navigate treacherous waters plagued by storms and hostile Turkish pirates lurking in the eastern Mediterranean.

3. The First Crusade & Godfrey of BouillOn: 

The Defender of the Holy Sepulchre

Despite the staggering losses, the surviving crusaders reached the walls of Jerusalem. In 1099, following a grueling siege, the Holy City was taken.

Out of the triumph emerged one of the most emblematic figures of the era: Godfrey of Bouillon (Godefroy de Bouillon). A pious and formidable knight who played a pivotal role in the capture of Jerusalem, Godfrey was elected as the ruler of the newly founded Christian state. However, in deep humility before his faith, he refused to wear a crown of gold where his Saviour had worn a crown of thorns, choosing instead the humble title of Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri (Defender of the Holy Sepulchre).
